JAYANAGAR: WHERE OLD CHARM MEETS CHAOS

bike for rent in Bangalore

Right till the 1960s, Jayanagar was considered one of the largest urban settlements in Asia. Then a suburb, built as a southern extension to the city, it saw the transformation of several villages into a developed area. This sprawling locality, spanning nine blocks, comprises Siddapur, Yediyur, Thayappanahalli, Bairasandra, Karisandra, Kattapalya, Ragigudda, and parts of Sarakki and Lakkasandra villages – The Hindu, 2013

Jayanagar was established in 1948. According to a few resources, the name Jayanagar was derived from the first name of a Maharaja called “Jayachamaraja” who ruled Mysore. This area was then reserved for different government officials and later opened to general public. Jayanagar stretch includes 10 Blocks, with 3rd and the 4th one being the main center for all commercial activities. The rest of the blocks are mostly residential zones. IV Block incorporates huge shopping complexes and restaurants. There are parks in most of the blocks giving elder residents the option to take long walks and connect with nature.

This locality has seen an influx of upper-middle-class population and government officials. In the last few years, this neighborhood has become a home to many IT professionals and businessmen. Currently, we have significant people like NR Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, writer Shashi Deshpande living here. Owing to commercialization, development of shopping malls etc. the demand for flats in Jayanagar has shot up drastically.

Jayanagar is well connected to major parts of Bangalore like Bengaluru City Junction Railway Station, Bannerghatta Road, BTM Layout, KR Road and Banashankari. There are many reputed schools and institutions in this locality, which includes Bangalore International Academy and Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, Vijaya High School, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science. There are hospitals like Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Apollo Specialty Hospital and Jayanagar Orthopedic Hospital etc. The locality is an address to malls that include Swagath Garuda Mall and The High Street Mall.

“As time passed, the main roads in the area expanded to meet the demands of several organizations and developers. A college building rose high with little disturbance in 4th T Block but was bearable. Later, the raise of Bangalore Central Mall on the main road gave way for more traffic, which otherwise was never seen in this area.” – Bangalore Mirror, November 2017

The commercial boom has not only given way to chaos but also affected the environment, which according to the resident in Bangalore Mirror was at one time quite calm and happy. However, over time the emergence of malls, schools and business organizations gave way to urban assault.

Another article talked about how rapid urbanization in Jayanagar has led to chaos and the charm of Jayanagar has faded into oblivion. We have witnessed an influx of people from various states. They are striving to find employment in the IT hubs and education in the most reputed colleges in and around the neighborhood.

Though Jayanagar is still considered to be a hotspot for potential commercial and residential buyers, the clogged and chaotic roads has made it quite painful for daily commuters to travel. Zip zapping through the commotion and traffic snarl has proved to be a tormenting ordeal.
